The band has been working hard on this album for the past couple of years and we're excited to finally be able to release it. Horrible Crowes Reviewed by Rolling Stone

9/6/2011

The Horrible Crowes debut album "Elsie" is reviewed by Rolling Stone Magazine. This album is produced by Worlds End client TED HUTT.

Rolling Stone gives "Elsie" 3.5 Stars:
Gaslight Anthem guy turns down the volume and gets ballad-y.

On this side project, Gaslight Anthem frontman Brian Fallon trades his main band's Springsteen-ian punk for pianos and ballad choruses - moving up the East Coast corridor not far from Billy Joel country. Fallon drops his trademark cheap-scotch growl to a whisper, singing about loneliness ("Cherry Blossoms") and missed opportunities ("Blood Loss"). The songs are more subdued, but he doesn't skimp on conviction, often playing the patron saint of hard-luck cases (including his own). And while this is sometimes just a soft-focus version of Gaslight's bruised romanticism, his weathered tenderness makes it stick. "Did you say you were afraid of dying?/I ain't lived a single day without you," he sings on "I Believe Jesus Brought Us Together." Call it corny - in his broken timbre, it's sad-sack gospel.

Leave No Trace Reviewed by The Observer, DJ Mag, The Quietus

9/6/2011

"Leave No Trace" reviewed by The Observer, DJ Mag, and The Quietus.

The Observer:
4 Stars- When Fool's Gold released their excellent self-titled debut in 2009, the LA band's African-inflected pop risked lumbering the 15-strong collective with the tag of Vampire Weekend copyists, even though frontman Luke Top often sang in Hebrew. Their immensely satisfying second album finds a core of five players toning down the Hebrew, and turning up the early 80s. "The Dive" in particular suggests the Smiths on a west African beach. Elsewhere, songs such as "Wild Window" channel brittle white funk. Throughout, Fool's Gold lollop along confidently, Top's husky croon offset by Lewis Pesacov's guitar lines, like dewy spider's web.
-Kitty Empire

DJ Mag:
8.0- Pyrite on the money. It's out with Hebrew lyrics- and half their members- and in with synths and The Smiths for the newly slim-line Afro-fusion band Fool's Gold. With singer Luke Top sounding like a less lugubrious Morrissey, the Californians' second album owes as much to Manchester as it does to Mali, but it keeps the ebullient spirit of 2010's debut.
-Paul Clarke

The Quietus:
Tracks like 'The Dive' and 'Wild Window', with their melancholy melodies and jangling guitars, recall 80s indie icons like the Smiths and the Bunnymen, whilst 'Street Clothes' takes an unexpected detour into disco-funk territory. Closing ballad 'Lantern', meanwhile, is as soul-stirring as a dream meeting between Tinariwen and Al Green. But, ironically, in expanding their sound, these guys may have sacrificed the singular vision that previously defined them - and with it their individuality.
-Michael Dix

Dev Hynes Interviewed by New York Times

9/6/2011

Dev Hynes produced the debut Bleeding Knees Club album, set to be released on IAMSOUND.

From NYTimes.com:
Dev Hynes, a prolific pop Sybil who has recorded as part of Test Icicles and as Lightspeed Champion, discusses his latest alter ego, Blood Orange, with Ben Ratliff, the host of Popcast.

Mr. Hynes consumes and produces cultural artifacts in equal measure. He recorded "Coastal Grooves," the new Blood Orange album that Mr. Ratliff described as "an underground pipeline between 1986 and 2011," during downtime between movie marathons and other projects. His various identities, Mr. Hynes said, are designed to give each new effort a chance to stand on its own.

"I love music to be just listened to and not have any connotations to it whatsoever," he said. "If I put out this album and kept it Lightspeed Champion, people would have listened to it but I'm not sure people would have liked it. Because they would have been like, 'this is weird.'"

Fool's Gold Album 8 Out Of 10 By NME

8/31/2011

FOOL'S GOLD | LEAVE NO TRACE | IAMSOUND

Despite that most hippyish of titles, Fool's Gold's second album finds them kicking off the Jesus sandals and stepping out of the sunny, love-beaded Afropop that made their debut a blog darling.

Their sound always blended LA psych-rock and dark indie with jaunty highlife sounds, and the sultry, Wild Beasts-ish "Balmy" and the Arcade Fire-worthy storminess of the title track are less happy-clappy than of old, pleasingly moody, subtle and complex.

Sometimes the likes of "Street Cloths" stray a little too far into musoville, but overall it's a masterful blend of worldwide influences without a trace of gap-year naff.

- Duncan Gillespie, NME
