Nikki Lane Featured on RCRD LBL
RCRD LBL features IAMSOUND artist Nikki Lane.
"I've been waitin' for something good to come my way," sings countrified newcomer Nikki Lane on "Gone, Gone, Gone" -- a sentiment that's been around as long as American music. And what better time to bring back that down-on-your-luck style than now? Lane, equal parts Neko Case and Loretta Lynn, leads the way with a sultry, Southern-accented vocal performance over anchored bass, clip-clop drums and just the right amount of slide guitar. No, it's not contemporary country, but more like something from a past era we're living through over and over again. Lane's debut LP, Walk Of Shame, is out September 27 via IAMSOUND and an EP with this track is available now.

Fool's Gold Featured on NPR
IAMSOUND artist Fool's Gold is Featured on NPR "All Things Considered".
Fool's Gold's newest album is called Leave No Trace, and there's little trace left of Hebrew on it — the lyrics are mostly in English. In a conversation with NPR's David Greene, vocalist Luke Top and guitarist Lewis Pesacov, the band's two founding members, explain the new direction.
Fool's Gold began as a part-time, informal collaboration while Top and Pesacov were working day jobs. The band held open-door jam sessions, sometimes with up to a dozen participants. Now that they tour full-time, their approach is more orderly. They've pared down the number of members to five, and assigned formal parts.
Pesacov says, "What we were interested in musically was finding a little more nuance and detail in the music we were writing. I like to think that on the first album we were painting with a broad stroke, and now we're getting really detailed."

It’s not just Nikki Lane’s raw, Tammy Wynette–style voice that gives her retro-country sound its stamp of authenticity. The South Carolina native, 25, who now lives in Nashville after brief stints in L.A. and New York, also has a backstory that is (to quote Billy Ray Cyrus) as country as country can be.
“While I was living in New York my boyfriend dumped me and moved to Atlanta,” she explained on a recent trip back to the city. “I was heartbroken, and stuck by myself, crying and upset. I’d been talking for years about making a record so I just started writing.”
Lane’s debut EP, Gone, Gone, Gone (which was released last month), is filled with dozens of moments just like this—the kind which evoke classic, old-school country themes like loneliness, heartbreak pining, and regret—but are kept alive by an upbeat, honky-tonk sound and a well-mythologized, survivalist spirit.
Take for instance the video for “Gone, Gone, Gone,” in which shots of Lane (dressed in all black and taking a contemplative ride through the Tennessee countryside on a ragged-out red moped) are intercut with grainy clips of her performing—on what looks like an homage to The Porter Wagoner Show—in a yellow paisley dress and sporting a towering beehive. Watching it, it’s hard not to conjure an image of a forgotten country starlet, who possibly came to a tragic end when fame and loving the wrong man got too much for her.
In real life, Lane is far luckier. After she made a pilgrimage to Nashville to record her first album (“I just wrote to lots of bands down there and said, ‘I suck at guitar, I sing pretty well, can you help me make my record?’ ”), she briefly returned to New York to find the album had served another purpose. “I got back to New York with the record and the guy who dumped me wanted to get back together,” she says. “We’re actually married now!” And who says country music has no happy endings?

Uncut Rates Fool's Gold 4 Stars
The September issue of Uncut Magazine rates FOOL'S GOLD as 4 stars. Upcoming album Leave No Trace, to be released on IAMSOUND, is reviewed by Sam Richards.
"Rousing stuff from the west coast Vampire Weekend with this second album, LA's Fool's Gold have managed the transition from 12-strong collective to conventional five-man unit with their bustling zeal intact. Frontman Luke Top now sings mostly in English rather than Hebrew (apart from verses of "Tel Aviv") but his voice retains a cosmopolitan richness, while the rest of the band switch instruments and styles with sublime fluency. The 10 supple, radiant songs blur the boundaries between African pop and funky American new wave with the same glorious ease as Talking Heads' Speaking in Tongues."
Q Magazine Rates Fool's Gold 3 Stars
The September issue of Q Magazine rates FOOL'S GOLD as 3 stars. Robin Turner reviews the upcoming album Leave No Trace, describing "Los Angeleans' Paul Simon-channelling second LP.
From Vampire Weekend's omnipresent A Punk to Cloud Control's joyous antipodean racket, the unlikely influence of Paul Simon's Graceland perseveres. La five-piece Fool's Gold - led by Lewis Pesacov and Luke Top - are the latest to weave world music through traditional, guitar/bass/drums rock'n'roll. Leave No Trace sounds not unlike a late- '80s John Peel Festive 50 playing all at once as African swing collides with C86 swagger. Opener The Dive sounds like The Cure's Just Like Heaven re-recorded by The Mightly Lemon Drops, while Street Clothes mainlines the languorous funk of Orange Juice. Festival ubiquity beckons."

Screaming Trees Release Final Album
In the waning months of the 20th century, legendary Seattle band Screaming Trees went back into the studio one last time. Having been released from their label and realizing that the outlook was grim, the Trees entered Stone Gossard’s Studio Litho to preserve the last batch of songs the band had written. Financed by the band and produced by drummer Barrett Martin, these sessions proved to be their last.
On June 25th, 2000, the Trees played their final concert in front of 20,000 people at Seattle’s Memorial Stadium, after which the band members went their separate ways. The final recordings were never mixed or released, and for more than a decade, the original two-inch tapes lay gathering dust in the basement of Gossard’s studio.
Twelve years later, in the winter of 2011, Martin and long-time friend and producer JACK ENDINO found the two-inch multi-track reels, carefully baked and cleaned the tapes, transferred them to a digital format, and brought back to life those final 10 songs. To their pleasant surprise, the music had a raw, energetic quality, with the band cracking jokes and howling with laughter between takes – they were clearly having a good time. Mark Lanegan’s smokey baritone was in top form and so was the band, with original members Gary Lee Conner on electric guitar, his brother Van Conner on bass, and Barrett Martin, the band’s long-time drummer. REM’s Peter Buck guested on acoustic guitar and electric 12-string guitar, and Trees touring guitarist Josh Homme played some rhythm guitar. The sessions were a remarkable last testament to the band’s impressive 15 year career.
