Dev Hynes Interviewed by New York Times
Dev Hynes produced the debut Bleeding Knees Club album, set to be released on IAMSOUND.
Dev Hynes, a prolific pop Sybil who has recorded as part of Test Icicles and as Lightspeed Champion, discusses his latest alter ego, Blood Orange, with Ben Ratliff, the host of Popcast.
Mr. Hynes consumes and produces cultural artifacts in equal measure. He recorded "Coastal Grooves," the new Blood Orange album that Mr. Ratliff described as "an underground pipeline between 1986 and 2011," during downtime between movie marathons and other projects. His various identities, Mr. Hynes said, are designed to give each new effort a chance to stand on its own.
"I love music to be just listened to and not have any connotations to it whatsoever," he said. "If I put out this album and kept it Lightspeed Champion, people would have listened to it but I'm not sure people would have liked it. Because they would have been like, 'this is weird.'"
